A Girl Can Dream: Ideal Car for Birding in the Field

June 23, 2016

What is the best vehicle for birding? I've long admired the stereotypical English country car, the Land Rover, for its easy visibility from any window and its ability to "go anywhere." Likewise the Toyota Land Cruiser, car of choice of warlords , can go anywhere, taking you to destinations unpaved, high elevation, pot-holed, long-neglected, washed out, etc., etc.; the same places you are likely to see some cool birds, if you are so inclined.

My family is made up of Subarus and Toyotas, which are fine for birding on tarmac, in a civilized fashion; with the occasional foray into the unknown of above. I admit I am seduced by the romance of those four-wheel-drive bro-mobiles Land-whatevers for getting to the really remote birding spots.

My crush is even further inflamed by my recent discovery of the Field Book Project at the Smithsonian Institute. Researchers are archiving and digitizing the field books of professional and amateur American naturalists from the 1850s and onward. The treasure trove of discovery is monumental, including the vehicle of choice.

I'm happy to report that I fall into total naturalist archetype for what others used in the field. You can see for yourself here. Happy hipster birding all!

I’m Bryony and I write and speak about birding culture.

Here is where I share my latest publications and projects in the niche of recreational birding, birding people doing cool things, conscientious consumerism (specifically as a birder), and birding travel.
