The Birder, Illustrated: Five women artists depict our pastime in visual media

February 26, 2023

Did you know a woman—Florence Mirriam Bailey—is credited for our popular person-with-binoculars trope of a modern birder? Who better than to gather in a story about images of ourselves than women artists sharing their ideas for our beloved pastime?

I spoke to five professional artists (and birders) for this March/April 2023 BWD story about the history of the “birder” image and how each of them contribute a valuable visual depiction of who is a birder. Annamaria Savarino Drago, Stacie Balkaran, Andrea D’Aquino, Jenny Kroik and Cecilia Rodriguez Oddone share their inspiration and process for the images they created. From mural to children’s book to commissioned event marketing, the images of birders depicted bring colorful, important definition to our visual library. Please read the story here.

I’m Bryony and I write and speak about birding culture.

Here is where I share my latest publications and projects in the niche of recreational birding, birding people doing cool things, conscientious consumerism (specifically as a birder), and birding travel.
