I spoke about writing for niche media on the Talk Freelance to Me podcast in June 2024. Listen to it here!

The Craft Side of Writing about Birding: Ever wonder about those nuts and twigs?

July 3, 2024

What does a writer about birding culture do?

As a writer for birding culture—a niche topic area—I get a lot of the same two questions: “You write about what?” and then, “Is there enough to write about birding culture to keep you going?”

I’m delighted to repeat “Birding culture,” and then “Yes, there is endless rich content in this topic area!”

Last month I got to talk about both questions with Ashley Mejia Cisneros on her lively podcast for freelance creatives, Talk Freelance to Me. Ashley is a sister journalist and content creator, and enthusiastic supporter of freelancers, interviewing various solopreneurs like herself, many of them women. She promotes the flexibility that freelancing can provide, and her podcast provides the tools to listeners to then make that happen.

I spoke about writing for niche media while also holding down a full-time day job. I share how I started writing for birding media by identifying information vacuums and filling them, fostering community among possible sources (and befriending many of them), and the commitment from the very beginning to feature the voices of women first for every story. I also share some of the unexpected, amazing opportunities that come from being so niche. You will have to listen to hear those!

Our conversation is a high energy 25 minutes of content—I hope you will listen to it!

There’s more nuts and twigs

Orchard seating at the locale of next month’s Travel Write from Wherever You Are class, hosted by me!

Join me in talking about writing craft in person! I’m hosting an immersive, 4-hour in-person writing class next month, August 3, 2024 Travel Write from Wherever You Are.

Want to hone your observations of the places you visit in order to capture their memory in writing?

Want to be among kindred scribes who love travel whether near or far? People who value sensory experiences of places they visit, and like to write about it?

Want to spend a dreamy summer afternoon in a transportive (yet local if you are in Western Washington) destination that feels like a flower garden in France?

Join me! Class spots are filling up (room for 6 more!). I hope to see you there for a fun and enriching writing and social experience.

And please share this email with others who might be interested in any of the content here about writing craft. Thank you!

Thoughts from the field

I’m Bryony and I write and speak about birding culture.

Here is where I share my latest publications and projects in the niche of recreational birding, birding people doing cool things, conscientious consumerism (specifically as a birder), and birding travel.
