Why I'm Listening to Birding Podcasts Hosted by Women

February 24, 2021

Women’s voices and ideas fill the airwaves of birding podcasts. Of the approximately 20 birding themed podcasts currently streaming, half are produced and hosted by women.

I love a woman’s voice in podcast media as she is usually speaking from my (female identified) perspective, she often invites more diverse guests than a guy birder might, and what she offers is a huge range of listening options from variety show, interviews, personal narratives, current events, audio story telling, political content to instructional, all within a birding context.

I’m describing the themes presented among these podcasts, not that each one presents all of them. That’s the charm of podcasts; they are reflective of what the host values and what she wants to share with us, and like we listeners, each host is different.

Among these birding themed podcasts, the hosts are Black, white, biracial, queer; they’re single, married, child free, mothers, grandmothers; they’re generations Baby Boomer through gen Z. In my estimation these women hosts reflect the current birding community, and about time.

This month in Bird Watcher’s Digest (BWD) I write about five birding podcasts hosted by women: BWD’s own Out There with the Birds, hosted by three female BWD leaders; Your Bird Story, hosted by Georgia Silvera Seamans and Loyan Beausoleil; Always Be Birdin, hosted by Samantha DeJarnett; Laura Erickson’s For the Birds; and The Birdshit Podcast hosted by the duo Mo Stych and Sarah Bloemers.

As a side note, Bird Watcher’s Digest is itself woman-owned! Think about subscribing to read the whole issue.

Additional woman-hosted podcasts include The Casual Birder, hosted by Suzy Buttress; Bird Calls Radio hosted by Mardi Dickinson; and the Bird Note presents Grouse, hosted by Ashely Ahearn, among others.

Happy listening!
