Thoughts from the field: behind the scenes of a Birding Media Professional

In the Field: How to Start Birding

May 14, 2016

Ever wonder how to get started birding? I mean, where do you even begin if you're new to it? I recommend public bird walks like this one (although did you notice the date? Try finding one a bit more of the moment!).

Most of what I know about birds as an adult has been garnered on these kinds of bird walks with people who know more than I do. That is how you learn--from master birders! I am amazed to see that these public bird walks have been going on for 100 years in Seattle, this one through Seattle Audubon.

Birding is a never ending quest, a constant learning curve, and has to be done frequently to maintain knowledge. Thankfully there is tons of room for beginners, those with just passing interest, and those who want to geek out about it--it's equal opportunity time in nature.

Tomorrow I am going on a bird walk of sorts, this one a "bird-a-thon" to see how many species we can see and hear in a single day across Washington State. I too am a beginner birder depending on the region, even within my own home state!

I'm excited to share the adventure and will report back with tips, stories, birds seen, and great photos (thanks to my twin sis Gilia who has excellent camera gear). Stay tuned!

I’m Bryony and I write and speak about birding culture.

Here is where I share my latest publications and projects in the niche of recreational birding, birding people doing cool things, conscientious consumerism (specifically as a birder), and birding travel.
